| Valid filename | A filename that adheres to filenaming conventions. |
| Value-added reseller (VAR) | A company that combines commercially available product with additional hardware, software, and/or services to create a system designed to meet the needs of specific customers or industries. |
| Vaporware | Software that is announced but not produced. |
| Variable-length field | A field in a data file that can accept any number of characters up to the maximum limit. |
| Vector graphics | In graphics software terminology, images composed of lines and filled shapes. |
| Version | A new or totally redesigned product. |
| Version upgrade price | A special price for a new version of software package, offered to owners of an earlier version. |
| Vertical market software | Computer programs designed to meet the needs of a specic market segment or industry. |
| Video for Windows | A format used to encode, compress, store, and play back digitized video. |
| Video tutorial | A videotape that illustrates how to use hardware or software. |
| Viewable image size (vis) | A measurement of the maximum image size that can be displayed on a monitor screen. |
| Virtual memory | A computer's use of hard disk storage to simulate RAM during process. |
| Virus detection program | Software that examines the files stored on a disk to determine if they are infected with a virus and, if necessary, disinfects the disk. |
| Visual Basic (VB) | A sophisticated version of BASIC used to create event-driven programs that have graphical user interfaces. |
| Voice-grade cable | Cable that is suitable for transmitting voice signals, but not data signals. |
